The Art of Embroidery

Both men and women embroider Pashmeena shawls. Embroidering Pashmeena is a very special skill as the textile is often light and fragile. Furthermore, there are various specialized schools of embroidery in the Kashmiri tradition. The design to be embroidered is marked on the shawl using carved wooden blocks – block prints.  The quality of the embroidery depends on the skill, focus and dedication of the artisan. Embroidery makes each shawl unique as the embroidery and the hand of the artist can never be the same again.
